Thoughts on Toradora

Hello everyone! I can’t believe that I haven’t discovered this gem of an anime until a few days ago which is more than a decade from it’s release. Even if I am so late and discussions about this anime is unnecessary, I still can’t help but write a post about it.

In the first few episodes, I couldn’t really see the anime’s charm. My sister was gushing about how this romantic comedy is simply the best but I didn’t appreciate it at the start. But as the friendship between Taiga and Ryuuji grows, I found myself sucked into the anime. Even if both characters claim they’re in-love with other people, I rooted for them to end up together very early on. The chemistry was just there. It was obvious to me that they would end up together and the “other” people they were in love with are just there to confuse these two main characters.

In terms of characters, the personality of the characters in Toradora are pretty generic for a romantic comedy. But, it’s their interactions that made me laugh and actually scream with delight. And I love that even though I knew that Taiga and Ryuuji would end up together, the whole series was still a rollercoaster ride for me.

Even though I was rooting for them, I still saw the toxicity of their relationship. Taiga was too dependent on Ryuuji and Ryuuji just lets her boss him around. If they got together with this dynamic not really changing, they’d just break up and not work. That’s why I love the ending. It might confuse others or not like Taiga leaving, I understood it. Taiga had to leave and fix her own issues. Ryuuji lets her go because he knows it’s for the best, he knows that Taiga would eventually come back and they would actually be better for each other.

*end of spoilers*

Overall, I really enjoyed Toradora. It’s been awhile since I got invested in a romantic comedy. The series made me laugh and it gave me all the feels. If you haven’t watched it yet, I highly suggest that you do. You won’t regret it!
